Man hurls toddler into traffic, cops say

The officer, whose name was not released, was off-duty and on foot when he saw a man later identified as John Taylor Jr., 21, yelling in the middle of Fifth Avenue near East 15th Street around 5:40 p.m. Saturday.Taylor then picked up a toddler on the sidewalk, shook her violently and then hurled her into traffic, where she was run over by a vehicle, police said. The 18-month-old girl was later determined to be the suspect's child, authorities said. The off-duty officer helped remove the child from underneath the car. She suffered some burns from the engine but escaped major injury, police said.
